Title: Tornado Safety
Sicilian Gorilla - March 5, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
They are prediciting that 2oo8 is going to be a very bad year for tornados, a record number are touching down this early in the year already, when there are supposed to be less common.
There are two forms of notices:
Watches: conditions are in favor of a tornado developing This is when you should start gathering safty supplies!Take this serious.
Warnings: a tornado has been spotted, the average time between when a warning is issued and a tornado strikes is 3 minutes.
WHERE DO YOU GO?
~ During a Tornado, the safest place to go is the basement.
~If you don’t have a basement, a downstairs bathroom in the center of the house is the safest, the pipes help reinforce the walls.
~If possible, get into a bathtub and put a mattress over you. This will protect you from flying debris as the walls of the tub protect you from the sides while the mattress keeps falling objects away.
~Never go outside during a tornado
THE EMERGENCY KIT
~ First Aid Kits and any medications
you or your family may need.
~Canned food, can opener and at
least 3 gallons of water a person for as many days as you are stuck
~Protective clothing and bedding, a
sleeping bag is also advised.
~A battery-powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries so you can hear updates and to see in case the power goes.
~Any thing for babies or elderly people.
~Written info on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water if you are advised to do so. You won’t be able to turn them back on if you do without professional help.
This is just a brief overview of what to do and what you should have, remember, tornados are fascinating things of nature, but they also bring complete destruction.
And 2008 is gonna see alot of them

I think it's just for the US.
I heard about the tornadoes touching down in Tennessee when they first mentioned it. I was scared to death how close they were to Sevierville. My boyfriend lives there.
I think 2008 is going to have more disasters though than tornadoes. Texas (where I live) has been going through serious drout (sp) for almost a YEAR. We got a weeks worth of rain back in June of '07 and that was it. We've only had slight drizzles now.
Whiskers - March 8, 2008 03:53 PM (GMT)
Same for NC. Its been dry here when we usually get good rains frequently. But there have been Tornado watches here too, And in my 13 years its been the first time I've seen one here.
White Rhino - March 9, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
Can anyone say Climate Change? Lol. New Zealand has been making an extremely warm-weathered stransition from temperate to tropical. We've had temperatures that were previously unheard of this summer and drought has been terrible in the south. Hopefully the autumn will bring in some more rain (though I could do without the cold weather).
Great White - March 18, 2008 09:32 PM (GMT)
Erk...Let's hope those NZ Endemics can pull through...
ZooTycoonLions - March 23, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
This..gonna..happen...for..michigan...?im..scared....
nourithepandasoldier - March 24, 2008 05:47 PM (GMT)
Since they are only predicted, they are not definitly going to be in an exact place. As some of you no, a prediction is something that may happen.
If you live in the eastern area of the US tornadoes are not as likely but you still need to keep aware of them and take safety precautions. So nobody be alarmed if you hear about a tornado just remember if there ever is one. Just follow the tornado safety rules taught to you :D.
Whiskers - March 24, 2008 06:21 PM (GMT)
I'm on the east coast. [[Thank God]] And I know what to do if one ever happens to pop up. I could easily jump into my closet or my brother or parents.
Shaz - March 24, 2008 07:49 PM (GMT)
The east coast has hurricanes, which are similar to tornadoes. :/
nourithepandasoldier - March 24, 2008 08:16 PM (GMT)
Basically they both have the same devastation. The west has earthquakes, mid has tornadoes and east has hurricanes. Every dog has its day. None of us are completly safe from harm. Im not saying this to scare any of you. But There are a little more hurricanes/tornadoes then usual.
[[Global Warming]]. But we cant just blame it on global warming. But staying on topic tornado saftey/hurricane saftey/earthquake saftey should remain a priority in case there is ever one suspected or warned.
Sicilian Gorilla - March 24, 2008 09:10 PM (GMT)
The east has tornados a lot to. A few weeks ago one touched down about 1 hour from us. We're in NC
Whiskers - March 25, 2008 06:08 PM (GMT)
You live in NC too SG? o_O And I didnt hear about that...

Yeah. Here in NZ March has unoficially been called a Summer Month!

I thought La Nina is active at the moment? :O_o:
brachiosaur - March 26, 2008 09:18 PM (GMT)
well i havnt seen rain up here in connecticut in sorta 3 months. the closest were noresters. so its possible its a la nina. i learned about hem in science last year.
la ninas cause cold weather in the tropical places and change the path of the pacific gulf stream causing warming in north america and alsaka. the cold air geting pushed south towards USA and mixing with the hot air from the gulf and tropical atlantic causing tornados. and warmer atlantic means worse huricanes.
Whiskers - March 27, 2008 11:12 AM (GMT)
I Never knew that...You'll have to tell me if something pops up here. :oh:
brachiosaur - March 28, 2008 08:16 PM (GMT)
well the effects of the carilinas would be the same as connecticut so it would be the same. i havent beem geting snow. but this is the first rain in a month :D
ZooTycoonLions - March 29, 2008 02:41 PM (GMT)
Yay!Im in the east part of US!err...I am not near a ocean or large lake!So no hurricanes for me;Or tornados
Whiskers - March 29, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
I'm somewhat near a large lake but I've never heard of one forming in a lake...But even if you dont live near the ocean it can still hit land and effect you.
Sicilian Gorilla - March 29, 2008 08:07 PM (GMT)
Yeah, when i was like 5, Hurricane Fran came off the coast and the eye was right over the area where we live.
And a friend of mine said a tornado once took out the house aross from their beach house.
ZooTycoonLions - March 30, 2008 05:14 PM (GMT)
err...Ok...but is it rare for a hurricane to strike a faraway house from where the hurricane started?Or if it isint here a tip...err kinda i think
Go to a tall building...
brachiosaur - April 2, 2008 08:56 PM (GMT)
umm actually it is common. once a hurricane went as far north as iceland. and a high biulding is the worst place too be.
Sicilian Gorilla - April 3, 2008 06:04 PM (GMT)
ecspecially tall, glass buildings.
Geckoheaven - May 16, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
No tornadoes for me...or hurricanes. Hurricanes are said to be more common in the South-eastern part of the US, Florida just as ONE example. Tornadoes...a little bit closer to home but not much. Just in Texas and surrounding states...well, mostly, but there's never either of these up in Washington! (Which is GOOD.) Earthquakes...I'm not sure if it applies to where I live but I've never experienced one as far as I can remember. Mostly in California/near volcanoes. However, I don't live in either of those conditions. The closest volcano as far as I know is Mount St. Helens, but that's on the West side of Washington, I live on the edge, more close to Idaho. On the news today, I did hear of some flooding happening...In terms of disasters, we're pretty safe. Currently, we're having a VERY SUDDEN heat wave. It just started today, and before then, it was always so cold...winter cold. Now, it's like, almost 80! (Degrees) The worst that can happen here is either 1. It's really hot. 2. It's really cold 3. A TON of Snow, rain, wind, or lightning.
Gloria - May 23, 2008 11:33 PM (GMT)
We've had tornado warnings here for the past two days. Houses down in N. CO were damaged and a panicking camper was killed while trying to outrun the storm in an RV.
I was never really worried, though we did have tornadoes touch down in/around Cheyenne. Nothing bigger than an F2 up here, I think. I got fairly tired of the repeated sirens and having to run out through the rain to reach the laundry room (my apartment is 2nd floor and the laundry room is below ground level).
Had some pea-sized hail earlier today and tornadoes east of town.
Things were actually better when I lived in Oklahoma because out there they have lots of people and resources dedicated to predicting, spotting, and tracking storms, and can give you ample warnings that are accurate down to street level. I felt safer there because I knew people were paying attention to the weather and most of the time warnings were accurate and timely.
Here in Wyoming they flip out every time somebody THINKS they've seen something that might POSSIBLY be a tornado but good luck getting any up-to-date information unless you have access to
http://www.wunderground.com in your storm shelter. I haven't been able to find radio stations which deliver weather info even when there is a tornado warning.
penguinman - May 23, 2008 11:47 PM (GMT)
Yeah I live in CO and it was pretty crazy! I'm kind of nestled in the foothills so we don't really get tornadoes but there was one in my county that was pretty close! Pretty wild, 7 tornadoes in one day is what I heard!
Spinosaurus - May 24, 2008 12:04 AM (GMT)
Now, whatever you do... If you are on a ferry in Lake Erie, Be prapared for the weather co change! One minute it was sunny.. Then the next I was about to fall off the ferry! Luckily my dad got me and stuck me in the van. Ever since then I always was catious about Lake Erie... and BOATS.

Yeah, the storms ripped up Windsor/Weld county pretty bad. Nothing bigger than an F3, in terms of size, but that's enough to bust up people's roofs.
One of my husband's coworkers had his house severely damaged.
(X)The Pie King(X) - May 30, 2008 12:33 AM (GMT)
