Title: February Contest
Steenbok28 - February 10, 2008 11:43 PM (GMT)
Firstly, I'd like to apologise for there being no January contest, as I had exams and a lot of studying to do, plus the start of the year was a wee bit hectic... Anyways -
Two's Company...
We can all make exhibits with one biome, and one or two animals from that area, but it takes planning and skill to make two seperate biomes work in one exhibit, and with species from different areas.
To enter this contest, make an exhibit of your choice with two biomes used, and at least two species from different biomes. Then take at least four pictures of the exhibit, and post them with a small description of how you made the exhibit and why.
The Rules
+ There is a limit of one exhibit per person, but you need to use at least four pictures.
+ The biomes are your choice, bu there must be two different ones in the exhibit.
+ The animals can be whatever you like, and as many species you like, but must be from your chosen biomes.
+ Post all entrants here.
+ The winner will be decided by a public vote.
+ Downloaded user-made content is allowed.
Prizes
+ 1st - An extra large 1st place banner.
+ 2nd - A 2nd place banner.
+ 3rd - A 3rd place banner.
Good luck, and you have 2 weeks starting... Now!

Are we allowed to use UCA's?
Steenbok28 - February 11, 2008 06:25 AM (GMT)
Yes, it does say that in the rules. :D

I guess because I've finished I'll post mine now then! :)
Shen's Entry Biomes: Tropical Rainforest and Desert
Animals: Bongos, Arabian Oryx, Scimitar-Horned Oryx and Addax
The Exhibit:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc222/S...FebContest1.jpg Overhead View
As you can see, there is a "moat" surrounding most of the exhibit, with a series of tiered waterfalls running down towards the desert area. I have tried to blend the foliage for both desert and rainforest areas together, obviously with the TRF area being more densly planted. All the foliage is African (or worldwide inc. Africa), and makes use of the Arabian Nights foliage.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc222/S...FebContest5.jpgOverhead View Two
Another overhead view, this time from a different angle. Here you can see that the TRF biome runs down into the desert biome, and that the water decreases in size when the extremities of the desert is reached.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc222/S...FebContest3.jpgAlternate Overview
This view I hope gives you a better idea of the elevation in the exhibit, as I wanted the TRF area of the exhibit to be higher up and more elevated than the desert area, and also this shows off the little waterfalls nicely. Also hopefully you can get the denser layers of foliage and trees that the bongos like to hide in.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc222/S...FebContest2.jpgTRF View
The view of the exhibit from the top of the rainforest area. As you can (or can't!) see, all the food dishes are hidden by foliage to provide maximum natural softness. The shelter for all of these animals is the rainforest frond shade to also provide softened natural looking exhibits for these ungulates.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc222/S...FebContest4.jpgDesert Area
The exhibit from the bottom of the desert area. Sweeping up the subtle incline up to the TRF area and you can see how much user made content I have used XD As well as SilesianTomcat's Arabian Oryx, I have used Arabian Nights foliage, Aim's biome reskins and various foliage made by Nique.
And there you have it! :)
zebralover - February 11, 2008 09:54 PM (GMT)

Steenbok28 - February 16, 2008 11:55 AM (GMT)
Can I also make it a requirement that all entries have an overhead shot, like Shen's? That way judges can see how the exhibit looks all together.
Tiger Lily - February 18, 2008 06:02 PM (GMT)
Tiger Lily's entryAnimals:Caribou,Moose,Grizzly Bear,Wolf,Wolverine
Biomes:Boreal Forest and Tundra
The Exhibit:
Here! You can see most of the animals are from Boreal Forest.Except for the Caribou.I know it is a Tundra animal but I think it's fit well with Mooses.
I built a large waterfall in the corner of the exhibit and a river too.In the river there are two bears. They like fishing.
There are five or six wolverines, two mooses and two caribous too.
The mooses and the caribous like each other.
The Forested and the Elevated Area:
Here! and Here! This is a part from the exhibit that has a perfect view of the syle of the exhibit. There are mountain areas covered with snow but also some areas with trees and plants and elevated forest floor.
There is another full view picture:
Here!I didn't use any downloads just the Grizzly bear reskin for better shots.
That's all!Hope you like it! :D

When you are zoomed out, hit the "Prt Scrn" button on your keyboard, then alt + tab out of ZT2, open up your image editing program, create a new (blank) image, and paste into that image. You should have an overhead screenshot of your zoo. :)

Hi! I know this is late, but I guess I'm entering one... I couldn't sleep last night so I tried to build a two-biome exhibit... (I hope the thumbnails are okay... I can switch them to links, if needed!)
The concept behind this one was to simulate the sort of terrain and wildlife that are found locally here in Wyoming/Colorado... I don't know if I really succeeded, but oh well!
Biomes: Alpine/Grassland
Animals: Alpine - Bighorn Sheep (penguika), Grassland - Bison, Pronghorn Antelope (Silesian Tomcat), Black-footed Ferret (penguika).
I know it's not much of a stretch to mix another biome with grassland, but that's what I had to use, given my choice of animals.
So here we go!
Let's start off with a map, just for reference. Yes, it's a very large exhibit... I hope it's okay I didn't do a lot towards making it accessible for the guests:

Here's an overhead view of the exhibit in 3 parts:

I've cordoned off a section of mountain/alpine biome next to a little creek with aspen woods and a pond. The grassland opens out beyond the creek bed (I don't know if you can see it, but the creek bed starts to run dry in the lower reaches of its course).
The Bighorn sheep keep mostly to the alpine section of the enclosure, though it seems that pronhorn also enjoy the higher elevations (or maybe they're just interested in that food trough I put out for the sheep)...

On the other side of the Aspen woods...

American Bison roam amongst various prairie grasses, along with pronghorn antelope...

... and the highly elusive and endangered black-footed ferret!

(I've... never actually seen one here IRL, sorry to say... though I have seen the others animals I used.)
We finish the tour with two more idyllic shots of antelope in a herd on the bare, open range with a lovely view of... well, what would appear to the Grand Tetons in the background, because no way are those the Rockies. XD

As a bit of trivia, pronghorn antelope don't seem to like jumping over fences like the rickety one shown in the pictures (although undoubtedly they could, if they wanted to), preferring generally to crawl underneath!
All the animals seem quite happy together. If I had some Mule Deer (another very common animal I see in these parts) I might have included them, too, but sadly nobody's made those yet...
Oh... and I think there might be a raccoon somewhere in the woods in one of those pictures... just for fun. XD
Okay, that's all I've got!
dino king - February 26, 2008 11:18 PM (GMT)
It's been 3 weeks is this done or what
catc - February 26, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
It's a month-long contest, so it should be done by the end of February, which isn't long from now :aww:
Edit: Ignore the above, I didn't know it was only two weeks lol That's what I get for not reading the rules -_-
Steenbok28 - February 27, 2008 07:49 AM (GMT)
Dino King, you and Zebralover still haven't given an overhead shot... You haven't met the requirements, so I extended it by a week.
You have until this evening (Bear in mind Britain's about 4-5 hours ahead of America, then I'll commence with voting.
dino king - February 28, 2008 11:05 AM (GMT)
but I did get a over shot
Steenbok28 - February 28, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
No, not the map style shot, an over head shot, but still ingame.
Also, the voting for this contest will run into March, I'm afraid, but I already have a contest lined up, so we will dve straight into that one as soon as the voting's over!

In case you hadnt noticed, this contest ended in Febuary. Hence the results topic next to it. Please use some common sense.
