Title: Ktrenal's Projects

Ktrenal - January 27, 2008 01:01 PM (GMT)
Well, making whole new animals is a bit beyond me at the moment, but variants are within my capabilities, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I like variants, because it adds variety, but a lot of animals don't have any at all.

To start off, I have created three variants for the Fennec Fox. I referenced photos to get an idea of the range of sandy-yellow-orange hues they can come in. Not a lot to work with, but still...

Default skin

First variant which turned out slightly green.

The second variant also looks a bit green.

Third variant which I'm happy with.

The first two variants I'm definitely going to have to modify a little to get rid of the greenish tint along the back...

Thanks for looking, and please let me know what you think.

gfh - January 27, 2008 01:41 PM (GMT)
Your lucky i don`t even know how to do a variant.

Whiskers - January 27, 2008 04:56 PM (GMT)
These are nice! Even with their green backs. :D

Ktrenal - January 27, 2008 05:45 PM (GMT)
Thank you. :)

I've now fixed the green-back-ness, though! I also learned some new things about PSP, too. Heh.

Variant one

Variant two

I'm thinking I might put together a small pack of variants or something. Undecided at the moment.

gfh - January 27, 2008 05:50 PM (GMT)
can you tell me how to do variants.

Ktrenal - January 27, 2008 06:54 PM (GMT)
There's a guide on how to do it at the Zoo Tycoon Designing Center forums. It's a bit too in depth for me to explain to you, but the guide is really good.

josh98 - January 27, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
I'M DOWNLOADIN WHEN IT'S HEAR!!!!!!

Ktrenal - January 27, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
Glad you like it, Josh. :)

I've now done a couple of Striped Hyena variants:

The original skin

A darker variant

A lighter variant

Animalover44 - January 27, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
These variants are pretty good. Keep on working! :D

zoo_tycoon2 - January 27, 2008 08:43 PM (GMT)
yeah, those hyena variants look awesome, cant wait

i love good quality, natural looking varient skins :ohnoes:

The Great Auk - January 27, 2008 08:47 PM (GMT)
tinting and shading are always the best type of varient to me the completely off scale ones are cool but unnatural sometimes the way u do it allows you to tell them apart like at zoos the feautures they have tell them apart. good job!

badisbadis101 - January 27, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
I just stumbled across your thread, and decided to take a look at it just to see what you were doing. I kinda expected some very low quality, poorly done projects, as that is what i often find when opening a new creators projects thread. However, i was happily surprised to find an array of good looking, realistic varients, which are much needed :D

Ktrenal - January 27, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
Thank you, everyone. I'm glad you like them. And yes, I fully agree that natural looking ones work the best, although weird coloured ones are fun sometimes! :)

ShenTirag - January 28, 2008 09:11 AM (GMT)
I love the 'yena variants, I've not seen any around before and yours are simply great! Keep it up! :)

Tiger Lily - January 28, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
You have done some really nice and natural variants, really good work.

Ktrenal - January 31, 2008 08:18 PM (GMT)
Been a bit slower during the week - work gets in the way of variant-making time. However, I do now have another one to show you all!

The Dromedary Camel -

Variant three

I am currently working through the desert biome animals, so coming up soon will be:
Scimitar-horned Oryx
African Spurred Tortoise
Velociraptor

GoblinShark - February 1, 2008 04:02 PM (GMT)
Those..... are..... beautiful ;( (-Closest thing to tears of joy-)

Sunny - February 1, 2008 06:44 PM (GMT)
I like the variant two most. Your variants are all very realistic, good job! :D

Ktrenal - February 8, 2008 12:12 AM (GMT)
And now, finally, I can present the next batch of variants. Thanks for all your support so far, too!

The Scimitar Horned Oryx:

Ktrenal - February 8, 2008 12:18 AM (GMT)
I have also done the African Spurred Tortoise. These ones are pretty subtle, so the variants are actually mostly visible when you get lots and lots of them together. You know, in case you ever wanted a huge exhibit filled with forty or so tortoises (it actually looks pretty cool...)

Variant three

Hope you all enjoyed these. As always, your comments are both welcome and appreciated.

Coming up tomorrow, the Velociraptor!
(variants are done, just need to get some screenshots)

Thank you for your time and attention.

Ktrenal - February 8, 2008 07:28 PM (GMT)
Today, we have Velociraptors, as promised! I'm swapping over to using links rather than posting the images directly - this page was getting quite image heavy!

First up, the females:

Variant three

And then the males:

Now that I've finished all the desert biome animals, I'm going to put them up for download, if people are still interested. Would you prefer all lumped together in one pack, put up separately, or separate files for animals that came from the same expansion pack?

Ktrenal - February 17, 2008 12:51 PM (GMT)
Today, I have Bengal Tiger Variants:

Original orange

Original white

A darker, redder orange

Golden tabby

A lighter white - this one was supposed to be snow white, but the stripes are a little dark. I'll probably go back and fix it.

Maltese - there are several other maltese Bengal Tiger variants out there, but to me they all look too blue, so I tried for a more smoky grey that would hopefully look more realistic. You know, aside from the fact that there's not really any hard solid evidence that maltese tigers actually exist...

I also created a fix so that user made Bengal Tiger variants will actually appear in game when you have Marine Mania installed. It works, but there's a slight oddness that I'm not sure how to correct yet. It makes variants show up, for sure, but the more variants I add in, the less chance there is of the original orange showing up.

When I put in all the variants above, I managed to place 175 Bengal Tigers in a small enclosure so I could compare them all and I didn't get a single one in the original orange skin. The effect is more noticeable with more variants - adding one or two variants doesn't have much of an effect, but three or four completely drowns out the original skin.

I'm not really a good enough coder to figure out why this is happening, but I'm going to investigate. If I can fix the fix so that it works properly, I'll release it for the joy of all the tiger loving Marine Mania owners.

My other variants will be going up soon - I'm just investigating to see if I can get my web server to host them, otherwise I'll upload them elsewhere.

And, finally, I'm now taking requests. Does anyone have a favourite animal they've always wanted some variants for? If so, please post and I'll see what I can do. :)

gfh - February 17, 2008 01:29 PM (GMT)
I would like to see a Barbary Ape variant.

ShenTirag - February 17, 2008 01:54 PM (GMT)
I'm very interested to see how you managed to work round that problem! Your variants are very nice, particularly your interpretation of the Maltese Tiger.

Ktrenal - February 17, 2008 02:22 PM (GMT)
Barbary Ape will be my next set of variants then, gfh. :)

And thank you ShenTirag. I'm glad you like the maltese tiger. :)

I'll give more information on the fix later, once I work out if I can actually get it working correctly!

gfh - February 17, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
Thankyou Ktrenal. I bet it will be very nice.

White Rhino - February 18, 2008 02:40 AM (GMT)
Wow they all look very good. I think I like the darker orange best (the game needed more normal tiger variants)

Tiger Lily - February 18, 2008 05:26 PM (GMT)
I like the variants...
I think your maltese variant is very good because it's not too blue. And all of your variants are realistic.

Whiskers - February 19, 2008 01:21 PM (GMT)
I love the Velo varients!~ I Seem to use Velos alot now and would love those in my game!

Ktrenal - February 19, 2008 06:28 PM (GMT)
Thank you, everyone!

I'm having a few computer problems at the moment - my computer won't talk to my webserver. But as soon as my new network gear arrives tomorrow or Thursday, everything shall be uploaded!

Whiskers - March 16, 2008 08:39 PM (GMT)
I Just downloaded all of your projects. ^^ They're wonderful!

Ktrenal - March 16, 2008 09:30 PM (GMT)
Thank you. :)

Sorry it took so long to get them up. My server was being slightly weird!

I also have two Barbary Ape variants done - think I might add in a third one.

Ktrenal - March 16, 2008 11:00 PM (GMT)
And now, at last, Barbary Ape variants!

user posted image

From left to right is Variant 3, Variant 1, Default Skin and Variant 2. Can't see it at this angle, but the dark coloured one on the left also has a dark face.

Still taking requests for variants, if there's anything anyone particularly wants to have in their zoos. I have all the expansion packs.

gfh - March 17, 2008 12:01 AM (GMT)
They look beautiful.

Twilighter - March 17, 2008 12:11 AM (GMT)
Beautiful variants! How about a variant for the Narwhal? If not the Narwhal, another cool one would be the Sea Otter. :D

Sicilian Gorilla - March 17, 2008 01:50 AM (GMT)
Dude! Those are awesome!

SoulEater - August 9, 2008 05:34 PM (GMT)
Yes I love the velociraptor variants. Where can I download them or can I download them and I would also love to see more wolf or moose variants.

Sir cosmius - August 9, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)

chrischi83 - October 29, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
