Title: December Contest
Steenbok28 - December 2, 2007 11:49 PM (GMT)
Winter Worldwide
We all seem to associate winter with snow, the cold, frost and ice, but in many parts of the world, winter can be much different. On the Serengeti, winter means the return of the rainy season, and brings life back into the landscape. Up in the Gobi Desert, winter means extremes of dry and cold, meaning that despite the cold, snow will not form.
To enter this contest, take a picture of a winter scene from anywhere in the world and post it, along with a short description of where the scene is from, and what winter means there. If you can find a real life photo that shows your chosen area in winter, please include it! This will make the contest more interesting for the voters, and they can see where you've made your scene the same.
The Rules
+ There is a limit of one area per person, but to show your area, you may use up to three photos.
+ The area can be anywhere in the world, but must have a description to go with it.
+ Post all entrants here.
+ The winner will be decided by a public vote.
+ Downloaded user-made content is allowed.
Prizes
+ 1st - An animal of the winner's choice, made by me, and a 1st place banner made by AnimalLover44.
+ 2nd - A 2nd place banner by AnimalLover44.
+ 3rd - A 3rd place banner by AnimalLover44.
Good luck, and you have 2 weeks starting... Now! :D

Sicilian Gorilla - December 3, 2007 01:58 AM (GMT)
I already know my area...
and we have to write the description ourselves right?
Steenbok28 - December 3, 2007 07:30 AM (GMT)
Yes, just a short description, nothing fancy, but I think it gives a more 'involved' feel to the contests! :D

I chose to represent a region of the Great Hungarian Plain

The Great Hungarian Plain is easily comparable to the Steppes of Mongolia. They're rolling hills of tall grasses that get very little snow in the winter, though what falls normally stays. Normal temperatures hover at around 10C [50F] but can drop as to as low as -20C [-4F]. But, for the most part, they don't see neither snow nor cold.
Typical animals here are the Kori Bustard [Túzokok in Magyar], the Lapwings [Bíbicek] and some wild horses [vad lovak], closely related to the ponies ridden by Mongolian Herders and the once-great Hunnic Tribes that inhabited this area.

I didn't see anything about downloads, so I'll assume they are ok, I just used the Penguika Amazon pack :)
The winter in a tropical rainforest is a very long, wet, and rainy season during which life is abundant and lush. I have chosen to display the Amazon Rainforest in this time.

Okay, I did the Volcanoes National Park Forests of Rwanda. The Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Volcano chain.
The winter months (December to Febuary) in Rwanda are the rainy season with one lasting from November to January and the other Febuary lasting into the spring. Snow and frost is rarely seen, and only on the extreme peaks of the volcanoes, far above the forests.
The Park is one of the last strongholds of the mountain gorilla and is where Dian Fossey studied them for 2o years until her death.
